At Clement Arts, we believe martial arts offers holistic development, supporting growth in body, mind, and character. Core Character Values

Each semester, we intentionally teach and practice these values in class:

  • Kindness: Treating others with compassion and care, valuing others as someone who bears God's image.

  • Integrity: Building trust through honesty and doing what is right—even when it's hard.

  • Respect: Shown by honoring instructors, peers, and parents through actions such as bowing, listening attentively, and refraining from interruptions.

  • Self-Control: Choosing thoughtful responses over emotional reactions, in words and actions.

  • Self-Discipline: Following class routines and the student code of conduct consistently.

  • Humility: Valuing others, staying teachable, and recognizing that learning never ends.

  • Perseverance: Practicing diligently, improving steadily, and seeing challenges as opportunities to grow.

Class Expectations

Before Class

  • Arrive early and ready to begin on time.

  • Use the restroom before class—bathroom breaks disrupt valuable training time.

  • Place personal items in the designated cubbies.

  • Arrive dressed in your gi (uniform).

  • Wear slide-on or slip-on shoes—these are removed before stepping on the mat.

  • No shoes on the mat. A designated area for shoes and water breaks will be provided.

During Class

  • Show attentiveness and honor by listening closely when the instructor is speaking.

  • Treat classmates respectfully—keep hands to yourself and practice focus.

  • Instructors will support focus with redirection. If needed, a student may be asked to take a short break off the mat. Continued difficulty may require adult support.

Attendance and Absence Policy

Consistency is essential for safety, skill mastery, and rank progression.

  • Notify your instructor via email if your student will be absent.

  • To be eligible for promotion, students must miss no more than 2 classes during the semester:

    • Miss no more than 2 classes during weeks 1–8

    • Miss no more than 1 class during weeks 9–12

Rank Progression and Belt Testing

A new rank—whether a belt or a stripe—is earned, not given. It reflects a student’s growth in discipline, skill, character, and respect both on and off the mat.

To be eligible for a rank promotion:

  • Students must demonstrate each test movement independently and accurately.

  • Students must demonstrate throughout the semester an understanding and respect for class expectations

  • Students must be present and engaged in each class practice, with no more than 2 absences a semester

Belt test structure:

  • The instructor will present the technique; each student will then perform the movement solo.

  • Belt testing takes place during the final week of the semester.

  • Students progressing more slowly (such as those attending once per week) may earn a stripe as a milestone toward their next belt.
